Goal

This project is raising funds to invest in TEARS' Graduate internship programme, ensuring that they can continue providing 24/7 access to support services for those impacted by sexual violence and abuse. This includes training and providing our skilled graduates with the required technology to assist survivors who reach out for assistance.

TEARS Foundation’s story begins with its founder Mara Glennie, a survivor of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), who sought help at a police station on a Friday afternoon, only to be turned away and told to return on Monday when someone was available to help her. She never went back. Years later, Mara started TEARS Foundation to make sure that anyone seeking assistance would receive help with care and without prejudice. Gender-based Violence (GBV) is a growing ill in South Africa with rape statistics ranking in the top ten globally. One in three women has experienced some form of sexual violence or abuse in their lifetime.

TEARS Foundation’s core service is to assist via phone, its primary service is its USSD helpline. This service is accessible 24/7, nationwide, free of charge using any mobile phone. A caring trauma-informed team of qualified Interventionists is available to support and guide survivors to the help they need.
