  1. We will only keep personal data that is relevant to the process of being a .Org user or Activist.
  2. We will take adequate security measures to protect your personal information.
  3. We will never sell, rent or share your personal information to a 3rd party.
  4. Every person who signs up as a Different.org user and Activist will be subscribed to our email newsletter called “aDifferent Week”. You can opt out at any time by clicking the Unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email.

The long version

General

This privacy policy describes how we handle your personal information, and your use of www.different.org (the Website) constitutes your acceptance of the terms of this Privacy Policy (the Policy). Your acceptance of the Policy means that you expressly consent for us to collect, store, use and disclose your personal information to help the Different.org website work. Information that we collect may be stored and processed in, or transferred to, countries outside South Africa, but such countries shall have the same level of data protection as is applicable in South Africa. We may, from time to time, in our sole discretion, amend this privacy policy to meet legislative and other requirements. All amendments thereto will be posted on the Website. Your continued use of the Website constitutes your acceptance of these terms as modified.

Collection and Processing of personal information

Different.org is committed to protecting your privacy online. Different.org may collect information about users who visit the Website and aggregate this information for statistical purposes. We use the information collected to help us understand more about our users and how the site is used in order to provide you with a better service. When you sign up with Different.org we require certain personal information including your name, email, city, and should you sign up with a social media account (Facebook, Google or Strava), your social media username. 

Where a user of the Website registers to support a project featured on the Website, the user’s information will only be available to Different.org. The appropriate project will be provided with contact information for that user so that the project can carry out administration activities related to the project. All such data will be subject to the POPI Act, however Different.org has no direct control over how such information will be used. Occasionally Different.org will send you correspondence that they feel may be of interest  regarding projects which the user follows, either electronically or by other means. You may opt out of receiving such correspondence by contacting Different.org. Users of the Website may opt out of receiving marketing correspondence from Different.org. Users may not opt out of receiving communications that Different.org considers necessary for the proper management of Different.org accounts, for example, notifications of dormant accounts and receipts for payments. Different.org reserves the right to record and display anonymous backer activity on its website and on social media sites.

Accessing & Deleting Personal Information

You may access your personal information that we hold and may also request us to correct any errors or to delete this information. You can send a request to info@different.org.

Sharing of Personal Information

We will never sell, rent or share your personal information with a 3rd party unless required to do so by law. Different.org reserves the right to share personal data in order to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, violations of Different.org’s Terms of Service, or as otherwise required by the law.

Communication

When you sign up with Different.org you opt in to receive our weekly newsletter. Every email includes an “unsubscribe” link at the bottom so you can stop receiving them at any time. From time to time we may request information from you via surveys or contests. Participation in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary.

This site uses industry-standard security measures to protect Personal Information.

Password protection

When accessing the services offered on our Website, part of the security measures taken include the issuing of a password. It is your sole responsibility to keep the password secure, and to not allow any other person to use your password. You agree that you will not hold Different.org liable for loss or damages of any nature that may be suffered as a consequence of the unauthorised use of your password.

Cookies & Logs

We may collect information about users who visit the Website and aggregate this information for statistical purposes. We use the information collected to help us understand more about our users and how the site is used in order to provide you with a better service.

A cookie is a small data file that your browser writes to your own computer’s hard drive in order to remember certain information and is linked to your user profile while on our site. Cookies are used to store your Username and Password so that you don’t need to type these in each time you log in. If you reject cookies, you can still search projects for service providers. However, in order to log in, cookies are required to be turned on.

As is done with most websites, we log each visit to each web page. A log entry can contain information typically found in the “header” of your web browser’s request such as the browser type you used, your Internet Protocol address, and the date and time of day. We may also log your cookie’s identification number and the URL of the last site you visited. This log information is important for security, audit and quality improvement, as well as for monitoring the health of our service.

POPI Act

Different.org complies with the regulations of the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) act. This means that we:

  • will only keep personal data that is adequate, relevant, and not excessive in relation to the purposes for which it is processed;
  • will use data only for the specific purposes for which it was collected;
  • will not keep personal information for longer than is necessary;
  • will not disclose personal details to third parties without the consent of the individual;
  • will allow individuals to have access to information held about them if requested; and
  • will take adequate security measures in order to protect your personal information.

Credit Card payments

Online payments are processed by Ecentric Payment Systems. Different.org does not receive the Credit Card Number, Security Code or Expiry Date.

Different.org is not responsible for the privacy policies of third party websites.
