This project is raising funds to provide up to 50 young people with skills development, mentorship, and mental health support through the Youth Play Ambassadors programme over a 12-month period. The project addresses youth unemployment in South Africa by assisting participants to develop leadership and workplace skills by taking on roles of responsibility within their communities, ultimately reaching over 100 families and 500 children through active contribution to community programmes.

For many young people, the challenge is not only the lack of jobs, but the absence of opportunities to build skills, develop confidence, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. At the same time, many are navigating the effects of ongoing stress and trauma, with limited access to mental health support. Without intervention, this combination significantly increases the risk of longterm social and economic exclusion.

This project is for young people living in under-resourced communities who are actively seeking opportunities to grow, but lack access to structured support systems.

Funding will enable us to engage up to 50 youth each year in a flexible, open-access programme that builds both personal and practical capacity. Through workshops, mentorship, and real-world opportunities, participants develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, resilience, and essential workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, coordination, and leadership.

A key part of our approach is placing young people in positions of responsibility within their peer groups and communities. This fosters a sense of purpose, accountability, and belonging — critical drivers of sustained engagement and positive life choices.

Our strong focus on mental health sets this programme apart. By equipping young people with tools to manage stress and process trauma and develop a trauma-informed understanding and approach to others, we support not only their immediate well-being, but their longterm ability to function, work, and build healthy relationships.

Listening to the needs of youth and linking them to opportunities or creating them ourselves we enable YPAs to self-select learning spaces feeding their interests, matching their availability and motiving them within our programmes and for their futures.

The impact extends far beyond the individual.

Each participant actively contributes to programmes that engage children and families, directly reaching over 100 families and more than 500 children in a 12 month period. In doing so, they model positive behaviours, strengthen community connections, and help create safer, more supportive environments for the next generation.

By investing in these young people now, we are not only improving their life trajectories — we are interrupting cycles of intergenerational trauma, strengthening community resilience, and expanding the network of care surrounding children and families.

This is an investment in both immediate change and long-term systemic impact.
