This is project is raising funds that will be used over a 6-month period to purchase 285 boxes of fish to feed 8 to 10 penguins daily in the SANCCOB critical care facility. The project aims to protect the Critically Endangered African Penguin from extinction by providing essential food during rehabilitation.

The African Penguin is currently the most threatened penguin species on Earth.

Once numbering in the millions, fewer than 8,000 breeding pairs remain in the wild today. Scientists warn that, without urgent intervention, African Penguins could be functionally extinct in the wild by 2035.

Every day counts in the race against extinction.

For more than 50 years, SANCCOB has stood on the front line of seabird conservation, rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing vulnerable seabirds back into the wild. Since 1968, our dedicated team has combined hands-on care with science-led conservation, education, research and emergency response to give seabirds a second chance at life.

Each year, SANCCOB treats approximately 2,000 seabirds, achieving an average rehabilitation success rate of 81%. The birds arriving at our centres have often endured immense challenges: starvation, illness, injury, predation, abandoned eggs and chicks, oil and other pollution incidents, and increasingly severe weather events linked to climate change.

For many of these birds, survival depends on something simple but essential: food.

One of SANCCOB's largest operational expenses is the purchase of fish to feed the penguins and other seabirds in our care. Birds undergoing rehabilitation require frequent feeding throughout the day as they recover their strength and prepare for release back into the wild.

During peak seasons, such as the unprecedented influx of abandoned African Penguin eggs and chicks experienced this year, daily fish costs can exceed R4,800 per day. These costs are separate from the veterinary care, medication, specialist equipment and dedicated staff required to save each bird.

Every fish fed is a step closer to survival. Every donation helps turn the tide against extinction. R175 buys a box of fish that can feed 8-10 Penguins for a day. Join SANCCOB in the fight to save the African Penguin.
