About this project

National Children's Theatre is a world class educational theatre for and by children, headquartered in Parktown, Johannesburg, reaching out to all South African youth in urban and rural areas, making a positive difference to their lives and encouraging them to explore the theatre and its many branches. Our objective is for children to acquire sufficient skills to gain in self confidence and self esteem, as well as competent communication skills in order to be able to speak comfortably and perform in front of others and perhaps be motivated towards a career in the theatre world. This long term aim will impact on their classroom activities, improve their leadership abilities and help in building a civil society.

This project will take their recent production, Oliver Twist, into Diepsloot and Cosmo City schools to share with the children important moral lessons through theatre. The primary theme in "Oliver Twist" is the age-old battle between good and evil. As quoted in Enotes, Dickens once wrote that he "wished to show, in little Oliver, the principle of good surviving through every adverse circumstance, and triumphing at last".

The funding will be spent on taking the play to poverty nodal schools. From their base in Parktown Johannesburg, the NCT Kombi and 9 actors would go out every day for one week, and present two shows a day in primary schools, in areas and schools selected by the Department of Education. (They already have a working relationship with the Department of Education which has advised them in the past on schools to visit). At least 300-500 children will be able to see the show at one sitting, resulting in about 2500 children being exposed to the production.

Broken down costs for the project:

Copyright SAMRO R2000
Salaries for 5 actors for one week R15 000
Artistic Director who travels with the cast R6000
Transport: hire of Kombi, petrol, tolls R14 000

NCTT is fully committed to further our aims regarding the accessibility of theatre for all children. We are working to be part of a community that fosters growth and self esteem and instils confidence, as well as educating towards careers in theatre arts.
