This project is raising funds to provide 40 mothers and their babies with weekly support sessions and skills-development workshops over 12 months to improve caregiver wellbeing, responsive parenting skills and early childhood development.

The Marikana Thriving Together Project is a new communitybased initiative by Hamba
Bamba Funda (HBF), expanding the impact of our successful Thriving Together Kliptown
programme. Rooted in movementbased, traumainformed learning, the project strengthens
caregiver–child relationships and builds the early developmental foundations that help
babies thrive.

We will begin with a group of 20 mothers and their babies, with the intention to grow the
programme as trust, capacity, and community partnerships deepen.

Project Focus Areas
With newly secured funding, the Marikana project will offer:

Food Security Support
Ensuring mothers and babies have consistent access to nutritious food, reducing
stress and creating the stability needed for learning and bonding.
Knitting Workshops
A creative, incomesupportive space where caregivers learn practical skills, build
confidence, and strengthen social connection.
Transport for Community Assistants
Covering transport costs for assistants who help facilitate sessions, ensuring the
programme runs smoothly and remains accessible to families.

Our Approach

At HBF, we equip caregivers with simple, practical ways to bond with and stimulate their
babies — turning everyday moments into powerful learning opportunities. Through gentle
movement, play, and relational support, caregivers learn to:

build secure attachment
support emotional regulation
nurture healthy early development
reconnect with their own sense of agency and wellbeing

When caregivers thrive, babies thrive — and when babies thrive, we grow stronger, more
capable adults who can shape healthier communities.

The Marikana Thriving Together Project is a step toward that future: a space where mothers
feel supported, babies feel safe, and a community can begin to heal and grow together.
