Goal

This project will relocate wild lion to a Community Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The pride of three lion (two female and one male) have been given to Somkhanda by andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, as part of their lion management strategy.

In the next few months, Somkhanda Community Game Reserve will become a big 5 reserve, aiming to attract more tourists to ensure that the reserve becomes a viable tourism enterprise. The introduction of lion onto the property is part of the long term goal to make the community owned game reserve ecologically sound as well as economically feasible, thus supporting livelihoods in the community and lion conservation in South Africa.

The Gumbi community, with the support of Wildlands, is developing Somkhanda Game Reserve, a community owned game reserve in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, into a tourism attraction by reintroducing key species. In particular, they would like to introduce a pride of lion into Somkhanda Game Reserve. To allow the introduction of the lion on Somkhanda, the reserve needs to ensure that the fencing is up to standard. This is crucial for neighbour relations, especially with a community owned reserve that is surrounded by livestock owners.
