I believe Mobile Health Care for Children, especially in rural areas, is a great cause. I am doing this because comprehensive health care and nutrition in the first 1000 days improve the growth and development outcomes of children.

Goal

Starfish is raising funds to cover a portion of the operational costs of The Wellness Wagon, a mobile clinic operating in the rural Ingwavuma area, KZN. The Starfish Wellness Wagon started in 2014 with just 1 mobile clinic and has since expanded to 4 clinics operating in three provinces.

The services include:

  • Maternal, paternal and double orphans
  • Children from child and youth headed households
  • Vulnerable children i.e. neglected, abused, living with sick, unemployed, severely disabled or alcoholic parents.

Approximately 13.5% of the country’s population are affected by HIV, with over 2 million children left orphaned. 64% of children are living in poverty, where the monthly per capita income is less than R1138.00, with 20% and 13% of children living far from any health facility or primary school respectively.(Child Gauge 2019).

Although South Africa has made some progress in reducing maternal and child mortality, the challenges faced due to poverty, HIV and the shortage of health care workers have significantly impacted progress. Key causes of maternal death include non-pregnancy related infections, namely AIDS (50%), complications of hypertension and pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes and cardiac illnesses. 40% of all maternal deaths are avoidable. .Seven out of ten child deaths are preventable (SAHR, 2013).
