Goal

Language is the key that unlocks the world. Without language, anyone will have an incredibly challenging life. This project is raising funds to adapt 12 literacy school units from American Sign Language (ASL) to South African Sign Language (SASL), that will be used in South African Schools for the Deaf, as well as consultations with the creator of the program.

The Literacy Resource for Teachers of Deaf Learners offers a lifeline of hope to Grade 1-3 learners within the Deaf community. With a deep understanding of their unique communication needs, this resource provides sign language-based literacy materials and interactive tools that will assist the child in embarking on an exciting path of literacy.

Amidst the excitement of learning, the resource also addresses phonological awareness, a significant challenge faced by Deaf children. By understanding the importance of literacy development, the resource introduces a groundbreaking intervention called "Fingerspelling Our Way to Reading." Through structured lessons and hands-on activities, learners are empowered to explore the intricacies of fingerspelling, decoding words, and making connections to printed text. It's a journey of discovery, where each flick of the fingers becomes a step closer to unlocking the wonders of literacy.

Backed by research from the University of Colorado, the impact of this intervention is profound. It's more than just learning to read; it's about instilling confidence and possibility in every child. As they master the art of fingerspelling, a new world of opportunities opens up before them, paving the way to a brighter future filled with endless possibilities.

NID-National Institute for the Deaf is asking for your assistance to continue adapting this valuable resource. Your assistance will help to empower teachers at schools for the Deaf in SA with the skills needed to teach literacy to their Deaf learners. Furthermore, it will assist in instilling confidence in Deaf learners to master literacy ensuring a better future for them.
