I believe Every Child Deserves a Chance: Helping Children with learning disabilities overcome learning barriers, difficulties. I am doing this because many children in poor schools cannot read and write because of undiagnosed learning disabilities. I believe identifying early learning disabilities and provide tailored educational support to children produces quality education for our children and built a better live for everyone. We are raising funds to support our Learning Disability Program aims to help children with learning disabilities to overcome barriers they face because of learning disability. The project is raising funds to provide early learning opportunities for 800 pre-school children in Masiphumelele, Cape Town, where many children lack access to quality early education, by helping to prepare the children for Grade 1. Project expenses include learning materials, equipment, food, electricity and water, and monitoring and evaluation costs.

Every child deserves the best start in life. A strong education foundation is key to the cognitive development of children's growth. When children are afforded quality care and structured learning, they stand a better chance of succeeding and excelling in schooling.

Unfortunately, not every child in South Africa is privileged with access to quality education that could offer them a better chance to compete favourably. Some children are disadvantaged from an early age, especially those who reside in under-resourced communities like Masiphumelele township, Cape Town. Many young children are missing out on quality early learning because of a lack of resources and safe, well-equipped spaces for them to grow, play, and get ready for school. There are about 6000 pre-school children living in this community, but only a small percentage of this attend structured learning like theirs. The remainder have no other choice but to attend an informal creche/daycare or even end up going to grade 1 with no early learning experience, which is a disadvantage for the children.

Masicorp runs three early learning centres in the community where nearly 500 children learn, play, and enjoy two nutritious meals and snacks every day. Teachers are from the community and professionally trained in early educare, which gives the children a positive head start. 19 informal creches participate in the Stay & Play programme, bringing another 300 children who enjoy fun activities, playground time, and support to caregivers with practical tools and advice to help them better stimulate the children back at their centres.

Impact story

A little girl called Olunje arrived at Masi Educare in pre-grade R. She was very shy, cried when asked questions and she battled to follow the daily programme. Her teacher, Cindy, worked with her throughout term 1 and 2 encouraging her to speak and slowly she started to understand more and answer. She became used to the routine of the school day, started to participate more and by the third term, Cindy noticed that her demeanour had changed. She had more confidence, was participating more in class and playing with friends. Cindy continued to support her and encouraged her to speak in full sentences which she managed by the end of year.
