Minds Matter: School Support Services
by Johannesburg Parent and Child Counselling Centre
This project is raising funds that will be used to support 24 children to attend school counselling sessions over the course of one year. The project aims to subsidise the training and weekly professional supervision of psychology students and intern volunteers who provide vital, preventative mental health and counselling services to learners in vulnerable schools across Soweto and the Johannesburg inner city area.
We use volunteers to work on our School Support Services. These volunteers are most often students who are doing their honours in psychology, or interns with our organisation. In order to work for us, they are required to undergo training, as well as attend supervision. They are not always in a position to pay for the training required, and thus we subsidise their training in order to prepare them for the role as a School Support Service Volunteer. In addition, we have a wide range of external professional supervisors who monitor and closely supervise the work of these school counsellors, a service for which we pay. We therefore require financial support for training, and supervisors, in order to offer the most professional and high quality service to our learners.
