This project is raising funds to support of Tebogo's dreams of becoming a dedicated intermediate phase teacher. Facing many significant challenges and setbacks, she's proven her resilience with a 22% Maths improvement and a distinction average (80%) at Rosebank College. Her initial funding source can't continue. Ignition saw her potential and needs your support to ensure she completes her education and inspires future generations!

Ignition,aims to permanently break the cycle of poverty for youth from Alexandra township (Alex), providing a better and brighter life for our students and their families, free of dependency.

We believe in the power of tertiary education as a means to break the cycle of poverty. However, less than 50% of students who enter into university ever graduate, and almost a third of black students fall out in their first year (Department of Higher Education and Training).

Over the 16 years of Ignition existence, we have learnt about the key obstacles that learners from backgrounds like Alex face, and also critically we have learnt how to help students overcome those barriers. We offer a package of comprehensive, wrap-around services to youth from Alex who wish to enter tertiary studies. Our services are designed to maximize the potential of financial aid (NSFAS or bursaries) by empowering our youth to succeed and graduate from higher education, and to go on to thrive in the workplace.

All our students come from very disadvantaged backgrounds, with many families living off social income grants, in cramped housing with shared ablutions. Many students are orphaned or from single-parent households, and almost all are from primary schools that start in Grade 1, with 50 or more learners per teacher. We select learners who have succeeded in the face of such adversity, learners who have shown great tenacity and commitment in achieving academic results that allow for tertiary studies.

Ignition works with individuals over a number of years. We help build their skills and resilience, and help them remove barriers to their success, as they transition from secondary school to tertiary studies, through their tertiary studies, and into their first year of work.
