The Somkhanda Community Game Reserve is a sanctuary for South Africa's iconic wildlife. To bolster its anti-poaching efforts and safeguard endangered species, Somkhanda has introduced a K9 Unit. This initiative strengthens wildlife protection while providing local community members with skills development and sustainable career opportunities.

The Somkhanda Community Game Reserve, a sanctuary for South Africa’s iconic wildlife, is dedicated to conserving biodiversity and uplifting local communities. To bolster its anti-poaching efforts and safeguard endangered species, Somkhanda has introduced a K9 Unit. This initiative strengthens wildlife protection while providing local community members with skills development and sustainable career opportunities, fostering both environmental and social resilience.

K9 Units are a proven force in combating wildlife crime. These expertly trained dogs and their handlers excel in tracking poachers, detecting contraband, and ensuring the safety of vulnerable species. At Somkhanda, the K9 Unit enhances anti-poaching patrols, increases security, and demonstrates the vital role communities can play in conservation. By investing in this unit, we aim to protect biodiversity while creating pathways for individuals to grow into conservation champions.

To achieve this, the project focuses on two key components:

Dog Handler Training
A handler will undergo comprehensive training provided by the IFPCP (International Foundation for Protection of Conservation Properties) under SASSETA accreditation. The course covers:
- Dog Handler DH1-5 modules
- Training materials, travel, and meal allowances
- Registration and administration costs

Field Ranger Assistant Development
One assistant will be trained through PAMCo, a CATHSSETA-accredited provider, obtaining a National Certificate in Nature Conservation: Resource Guardianship. This entry-level qualification will:

- Develop field rangers with potential for K9 specialization
- Create a pathway for further career growth in conservation
- Include aptitude and orientation tests to ensure optimal team development

To bring this vision to life, WILDTRUST aims to assist Somkhanda raise R92,500 to fund the training of one dog handler and one assistant ranger. This amount will cover essential expenses such as training fees, materials, travel allowances, and administrative costs. Your contribution will not only help protect South Africa’s wildlife from poaching but also empower individuals from local communities with meaningful career opportunities.
