Training in African cities like Dar Es Salaam, Lusaka or Maputo has something in common with trail running – the need to concentrate pretty hard on what you are doing! In both cases you can see your rear end pretty badly but the consequences of falling into a catch pit (with unnamed and possibly unmentionable contents) is likely to be a bit more severe than falling into a thorn tree. In many cases, the sidewalks are just as uneven. The driving “code” in african cities can also be pretty funky. As a result, don’t assume that the car coming towards you is necessarily on the right side of the road, or even on the road at all. On the sidewalks there is pretty much no code at all for pedestrians but most people are good natured and well mannered. They also show a fair bit of interest and amusement at a Lungu road running in their city.
