One of our partner NGOs, KwaZulu-Natal-based iThemba Projects, told us more about their home-based Early Childhood Development intervention programme, ‘Parents who Play’.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) mentors like Lerato visit families in the community and help parents learn the importance of ECD, equipping them to give their children the kind of stimulating home environment they need to develop and thrive. Parents also attend twice-monthly parent-child playgroups, where they interact with other parents, and create resources to take home. At playgroup, mentors also address questions and challenges the parents are facing – like age-appropriate discipline, or nutrition. “I enjoy seeing parents get excited about their children’s development,” explains Nox, another mentor. “Parents who are reluctant at first to participate, or play with their kids, are now inviting their parents to join the programme!”.
