Why would you choose to spend one whole day in a cage in Sandton City, dressed in an animal onesie? We chatted to Roger Goode (RG) and his team about their decision to support the NSPCA by doing just that on Mandela Day.

So why did you guys decide to support the NSPCA?

RG: There’s been a lot of social media coverage on animals lately: Harambe the Gorilla, the Jaguar that got shot at the Brazil Olympic ceremony, the two lions that got killed in Michigan and a few other incidents. I can’t go onto Facebook without seeing something about cruelty towards animals. I’ve always loved what the NSPCA does, and their inspectors are amazing! A few of us are passionate about animals, so we decided to do something to help, and Mandela Day was the perfect day to do this.

Ryan (producer of the Roger Goode Show): I love animals, and also love what the NSPCA does. My two pugs are adopted. We wanted to raise awareness for the great work the NSPCA does, and also promote the idea that wild animals should be in the wild, not in cages.

How has the experience been so far?

RG: I’ve never been a charity person up until now. It’s quite ironic when you reverse the roles – many people just walk straight past. But we’ve also seen lots of kids donating, and asking their parents to donate, which has been great.

Sureshnie Rider: A lot of people have simply walked past us in this cage, paying us no attention. This is what a neglected animal in a cage must feel like when they get no attention. We’ve also experienced what it must feel like to be an exotic animal, that gets stared at and photographed all the time. We’ve loved the support from the children.
