She ran her hand along the rough surface of the newly plastered wall, her splayed fingers searching for any inconsistencies. Using the curve of the building as her guide, she made her way around the whole building in this way. She could feel the builder’s impatient gaze on her, even though she could not see him. Despite this, she continued slowly, methodically – after all, how else was she going to know whether or not he had done a good job with the plastering of her new house?

Upcoming Project: The Papillon Foundation

We’re excited to be partnering with The Papillon Foundation, a community based organisation in Rosettenville, in the south of Johannesburg. We’re helping The Papillon Foundation fundraise so that they can offer the well-known LAMB International Trauma Training Course for child handlers, free of charge, to those working with children. The aim of the training is to train and equip caregivers in understanding trauma, and in turn, how to recognize trauma and to understand the impact trauma has on the life of a child. The course is presented by Bev van Rensburg, a specialist on children in crisis; and Sarah Allen, a qualified Occupational Therapist.

Behind The Scenes

We’re partnering with Flying for Life to fundraise for flights to the remote Vhembe District in Limpopo. The purpose of the visits is to provide community members with life-changing cataract surgery. Although this is a relatively simple procedure, the remoteness of the location means that many people are unable to travel the distance to a hospital where they can have the required surgery. Bringing ophthalmologists to those requiring surgery ensures that those who potentially would never be able to see properly again, regain their sight.

We wanted to tell the story of the life-changing work done by Flying for Life, so we have gone to visit some of the people who have benefited, or will benefit, from cataract surgery. Ryan shared some of his behind-the-scenes photos of photographer Jono Wood at work.

Featured Photo: The Papillon Foundation

We got to sit in on a training session for trauma counselling for children held at The Papillon Foundation’s Community Centre last Saturday. We love the work they do and look forward to enabling them to host more of these training sessions. This little guy had come with his mother, who was attending the training session.
