We like getting to know the people behind the non-profit organisations that we partner with. Today, Lorin Edgar, Fundraising Manager for the Starfish Greathearts Foundation, tells us more about working for a non-profit organisation.

In 10 words or fewer, what is the idea behind Starfish Greathearts Foundation?

Our founding parable, that anyone, anywhere can make a difference…one child at a time.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received (in the context of a Non-Profit Organisation)?

Always ask, the worst you can get is no.

What advice would you give those wanting to work for, or start, a Non-Profit Organisation?

My first feeling is that there are over 100 000 registered NPOs in South Africa, so before starting a new NPO, look into areas of collaboration where people are making the kind of impact you can partner with or enhance.

What, in your mind, has been Starfish Greathearts Foundation’s biggest success?

Starfish provides innovative and cost-effective programmes, through a model of supporting existing Community-Based Organisations. We work together with these partners to build sustainability and entrench a “community-owned” mindset. Through regular coaching, organisations goals can be achieved and the organisations are better able to provide child support services.

What have you / your organisation learnt from mistakes that may have been made?

I think the key is to always have your finger on the pulse, be innovative in your thinking and working. And to keep your vision close to your heart so that it informs all that you do.

In what way would you like Starfish Greathearts Foundation to impact South Africa?

With a keen focus on health we would like to see all of our children valued, protected and empowered to realise their dreams.

Have you met any people or heard any stories that have inspired you to do the work that you do? If so, please tell us a little more.

There are many, but one that sticks out is of a girl that attended one of our organisations in the Eastern Cape. She returned a few years after graduating to get married at the centre where her life changed to start the next exciting chapter of her life.

Nombulelo returns to Ubomi Obutsha centre to get married
Nombulelo was an orphan from the community and joined the centre in 2002. She embraced all that the centre offered her and made choices that positively influenced her life. She felt that this was a turning point for her and could now dream and have hopes for the future. She had since moved out of the community but in recognition of Ubomi giving her young life new hope she returned to the centre to get married. She returned to the place where her life changed to start the next exciting chapter of her life. This is a testimony to the impact that the centre had on her life and changed her outlook on her situation.

Starfish supports such Community-Based Organisations that aim to bring life, hope and opportunity to the children they support. It is stories such as these that show the difference that can be made to a child and that we can all work together to positively affect someone’s life.

Why did you decide to do the work that you do?

I think working for an NPO is a calling, and for me a little genetic as my mom worked in the charity space too. It’s awesome to be able to use your talents in a meaningful way to bring positive change.
