WILDOCEANS, a programme of the WILDTRUST, is fundraising to sustain the Ezemvelo Turtle Monitoring Programme. This programme employs members of the local Maputaland community to monitor and protect vulnerable Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles that visit the shores of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site.

Leatherback turtles are critically endangered, while Loggerhead turtles are listed as threatened in the Red data book. We need to protect them and need YOUR HELP….

The nightly ritual of turtles emerging onto beaches in South Africa to lay eggs on the Maputaland coast caught the attention of scientists in the early 60’s. It was then also evident that these animals were being killed for their meat when they emerged from the sea to nest, and their eggs were being removed illegally by local communities living along the coast.
