Mzomuhle Phakathi is fundraising for Ocean Stewards - Custodians for our Oceans
by WILDTRUST
I believe Ocean Stewards – Custodians for our Oceans is a great cause. I am doing this because...
Mzomuhle Phakathi
Through its Ocean Stewards Initiative, WILDOCEANS aims to nurture a new generation of young minds that heed the call of the ocean to pursue career paths focused on marine science and conservation; and contributing to sustainable coastal livelihoods and the fast-emerging blue economy in South Africa.
The project focuses on practical skills, expanding the cohort’s knowledge base and building on their foundations. This is achieved through a variety of ways and with YOUR support this includes:
- Water Confidence / Swimming Lessons
- Dive Training
- Science Session
- Science Communication
- Leadership Training
- Biomimicry Learning
WILDOCEANS, a programme of the WILDTRUST, is fundraising to upskill young marine science and conservation students by providing a formative experiential journey that gives them unique insights into marine conservation and gets them “workplace-ready” by providing them with watermanship classes and specialised training to ensure that they are equipped for jobs in the sector as South Africa enters the blue economy.
The Ocean Stewards project was started in 2015 and has taken in 102 students to date across the Western Indian Ocean. Ocean Stewards are provided ongoing mentorship and support for future study opportunities, citizen action, and multiple learning and networking opportunities providing a channel for students to take further steps towards becoming professionals.
