Creating jobs through entrepreneurship is a program by Rhiza Babuyile within our business hub in Orange Farm. The business hub is called Buzz @ Orange Farm and was launched in November 2016 in partnership with some of our sponsors like Experian, Absa, the Embassy of the Netherlands and Orange Corners.
Within the business hub we provide local (young) entrepreneurs with the following:
- Start-up incubation training.
- Training for existing entrepreneurs.
- Seed capital.
- Office space for existing entrepreneurs and start-ups.
- Training and business support for start-up SMMEs.
- Start-up Incubation Training
For our start-up training we make use of the LEAN start-up methodology. Within this methodology the entrepreneurs start with a phase which is called idea generating. When the entrepreneurs have generated their business idea, they now start building this idea by developing their product or service through prototyping. After they have a product or service they now get customer feedback and therefore measure how their product or service is received. They learn through the feedback received from their customers. This feedback is used to improve their business idea.
- Training for existing entrepreneurs.
We train existing entrepreneurs in the following skills:
- Business model canvas
- Marketing
- Life skills
- IT training
- Telephone etiquette
- Networking
- Customer relations
- Business communication
- Financial administration
- Pitching and presenting
- Introduction to commercial law
- Seed Capital
Start-up businesses can receive seed capital to grow their businesses in the shape of a microloan. This microloan will be a direct contribution to their business between R5 000 and R20 000 and will be paid back in 18 months.
- Office space for existing entrepreneurs and start-ups.
The business hub has office space that gives the entrepreneurs access to computers, printing, internet and telephones. Entrepreneurs can make use of these spaces in order to improve the effectiveness of their businesses.
- Training and business support for start-up SMMEs.
Start-up MMEs receive training and business support bi-weekly on Wednesdays. The training is similar to that of the existing entrepreneurs. The business support is focused on helping the entrepreneurs with the day-to-day challenges they face within the operations of their businesses.
Goal
Develop 30 entrepreneurs within the community of Orange Farm. The goal is that the average income of the entrepreneur increases and that within a year they hire at least one person.
The goal is therefore that through this project 60 sustainable jobs are created, all through entrepreneurship so that we slowly but surely create a local, township based ecohub.
Measurable Impact
The measurable impact of the program is simple; the average income of the entrepreneurs must increase with at least R3 000 within the first year of operations.
