Melody Madanha Maganga is fundraising for Rooftop Resilience: Powering Urban Farming
by Lutheran Community Outreach Foundation
Rooftop farming addresses food insecurities, rising living costs and climate challenges.
Melody Madanha Maganga
This project is raising funds that will be used to strengthen and expand the NGO’s rooftop garden into a more resilient and sustainable food-learning system for young people participating in their school-linked programme by purchasing an inverter and battery for their solar system. This project will help ensure uninterrupted irrigation, protect crops cared for by learners, and reduce reliance on unstable electricity.
This project directly benefits learners from inner-city high schools in Johannesburg, particularly those in Hillbrow and surrounding areas. This includes learners living in flats and high-density urban environments. Many of these young people have limited access to agricultural land or practical environmental education. The programme provides them with structured, hands-on learning that builds skills in food production, sustainability, and renewable energy systems. Also, beneficiaries include, educators and partner schools who benefit through practical curriculum support. Surrounding communities gain exposure to sustainable food practices and improved environmental awareness.
