In today's economy, job creation is essential for fostering economic growth and empowering communities. One promising avenue for job creation lies within the fashion, textile and tailoring industry. With its potential for innovation, creativity, and skilled craftsmanship, a fashion and tailoring initiative can serve as a catalyst for employment opportunities, particularly in communities where such skills are prevalent.
The primary objective of this project is to outline a strategic plan for establishing a fashion and tailoring initiative aimed at creating sustainable jobs. The initiative will focus on leveraging local talent, fostering creativity, and providing training and employment opportunities in the fashion and tailoring sector.
Ten unemployed fashion designers and tailors (preferably black youth) will be identified and offered an opportunity to collaborate with Kudzo Foundation in the heart of the City of Johannesburg for a duration of six months. During this time, they will be exposed to the creative industry and equipped with skills to ultimately run a small to medium enterprise. All machinery will be provided by the organization.
Each individual will receive a startup kit (includes a toolbox with sewing equipment, Yoco machine, material and fabric), a free financial literacy workshop, a monthly stipend (for cashflow/petty cash) and access to the market through social media platforms, fashion shows, expos etc. The creative will be expected to secure orders and generate extra income. This initiative has the intention to implement SDG 8 for decent work and economic growth through job creation.
