Goal

Kids Haven opened in 1992 to serve the homeless (street) children and children in crisis in the Ekurhuleni region, South Africa. Everything they do is focused on protecting these children and giving them a future.

Kids Haven run a bridging programme for homeless children to help better prepare them for formal schooling. These children are children living in the Kids Haven Shelter who are in first stage rehabilitation and who have dropped out of school due to their street connections. This programme remediates their behaviour and improves basic literacy skills and prepares them for inclusion in formal school. Kids Haven provides for about 30 to 60 children per month with around 20 children placed into formal school annually. The children who don’t cope at formal school are brought back into the Bridging programme.

The Bridging School Programme meets the need of children in social crisis – street connections have disrupted their family life and resulted in dysfunctional families and poor (if any) attendance at school; plus addresses the important need to include these children in main stream education so that they have every opportunity to reach exit Grades and prepare for the world of work.

The money for the project will be used to educate 25 children. This will be broken down into human resources costs, educational resources, a holiday school and the ensuring that at least 20 children are included into formal schooling from the Bridging School Programme.
