In 2006 I became the father of a healthy, happy girl by the name of Karla. Grandfather and granddaughter could not see each other as often as we would have liked to as we lived 1200km from my parents, but Karla thrived on the attention from my father. Then the unexpected call from my mother; my dad had cancer, and the doctors gave him a few days, maybe, if we were lucky, a week. My dad passed away 10 days later, fighting till his last breath. In 2014 I started working for a company named Izazi. I became friends with Theunis Greef whose son, Stefan, has Fanconi Anemia, raising the chances of him getting cancer tremendously. I could not even bring myself to think of the responsibility and uncertainty as Theunis is my age and Stefan is in the same age group as Karla. Stefan is much better and their family is living with FA, but Theunis and their story had a profound influence on me. There are many more children out there, trying to be just a kid, but fighting the biggest battle of their lives! One of my very good friends, Iris, has easily convinced me to turn my personal challenge to complete the Ironman 70.3 Durban triathlon into raising funds for a group of selfless, unbelievable volunteers, also known as The CHOC Cows. They do unbelievable work to help the children and their families who are fighting the battle against cancer, which my dad lost, and I can only pray that Karla will be spared. My target for the triathlon is R8000 and it would be a huge honor for me to be able to compete on behalf of these brave young children. Could you please help me to reach that target by contributing to this incredible cause for really incredibly brave children?
