Goal

The Lapalala Wilderness School is raising funds to enable 60 learners and 4 teachers to attend Environmental Education and Awareness training. The impact of the project is to identify and nurture conservation champions of the future and to empower youth to take responsibility for and consequently action to improve their local environment in a sustainable manner. The training will include:

Biodiversity and conservation
Anti-pollution, anti-degradation, waste management and clean up operations
Prevention of erosion of the environment
Regeneration, rehabilitation and sustainable management of the affected environment
Planting of indigenous plants & trees, through Arbor Day celebrations supported by the LWS
Youth environmental education and programmes, as conducted by the LWS

The Lapalala Wilderness School (LWS) is situated within the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, which is of great relevance to conservation management as well as to tourism planning and development. Community and farm schools from the direct surrounding rural areas are invited to the LWS for environmental education programmes free of charge.

Within the Bakenberg community (east of Lapalala Wilderness Reserve) falling under the Mogalakwena Municipality we have worked with the following villages: Rapadi, Mushi, Ga-Tshere, Nkidikitlana, GalakwenaStroom, Jakkalaskei, Basterspad, Bokwidi, Vanwykspan, Marulaneng, Steilloop, Kitty, Shongwane, Overyssel, Marken. Not only do these schools visit the LWS but our Sustainable Schools programme coordinator also visits these villages twice a month.

This project will provide:

Nation Building by providing a centre of excellence to ensure the support and success of environmental projects within the community.
Skills transfer by the environmental educators through our environmental education programmes to the youth of Limpopo
Creation of partnerships within disadvantaged communities by bringing together community/farm schools and making it possible for them to work together to maintain local environmental integrity, and foster a desire to protect the environment

Learners attending environmental education programmes at the LWS gets full exposure and knowledge transfer to the following subjects. Developing a passion for their environment and consequently for conservation and are thus empowered to make positive changes within their communities both for the betterment of those communities and the natural environment:
