1. Be engaged. Talk to those around you, and listen sincerely and attentively – even these seemingly insignificant gestures can change someone’s day.

2. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Treat others as you want to be treated – simple as that.

3. Step out. The first step might be scary but it doesn’t have to be perfect. All that matters is that it is a step forward.

4. Kindness does matter. Showing concern and care for others is powerful – especially when nothing is expected in return.

5. Words can build or break. Sincere encouragement can bring hope and life. So often in South Africa, we underestimate the effect our words, good or bad, can have. Choose them carefully.

6. Generosity. Anne Frank once said that “no one has ever become poor by giving”. While giving may take sacrifice, you will gain in other ways.

7. Humility is not for sissies. So often, humility is misconstrued for weakness. C.S. Lewis corrected this misconception when he said that “humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less”.

8. Be brave. Sometimes making a difference means taking a stand and speaking up. President Barack Obama recently said (about being president) that “sometimes it requires you making hard decisions even when people don’t like it, and doing things that are unpopular, and standing up for people who are vulnerable but don’t have some powerful political constituency…”.

9. Strength in diversity. Appreciate and try to understand people’s differences.

10. Love your city. Living with purpose and passion to see positive change happen in the city you live in, will bring change. It doesn’t have to be on a large scale, such as the whole of South Africa – do what you can do to reflect a positive attitude toward your city.

We as people are busy destroying ourselves and our planet and something efficient has got to be done, like yesterday. The steps in this article has really made a few things clear and it is going to be hard work to share my thoughts and meanings about our dear Earth. The home in which we live in.
