This project is raising funds to provide partnering communities in KwaZulu-Natal with safe drinking water, as well as to plant indigenous trees in community restoration areas. This will be done by bartering indigenous trees - grown by community growers - for water filtration, sanitation and storage products.
Access to water is a basic right in South Africa. Yet, for many people, this right remains elusive, especially when it relates to reliable access to clean drinking water. The recent closure of beaches in KwaZulu-Natal due to poor water quality of rivers flowing into the sea, has drawn attention to the poor state of river health, the primary source of water that most rural communities depend upon. Climatic events, such as the 2022 floods illustrated the poor state of municipal water infrastructure and the need to act against the drivers of global climate change.
The WILDTRUST has a long history of growing and planting indigenous trees to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Indigenous trees, planted in the right areas pull carbon from the air and assist other efforts to prevent global temperatures from rising.
