This project is raising funds to enable National Children's Theatre to take the play Innocence Lost to many schools in Soweto to educate children in Grades 7 and 8 about the dangers of sex trafficking, how to identify sex traffickers and what to do when they are approached by would-be sex traffickers

INNOCENCE LOST PROJECT

Dubbed the "rape capital of the world" by Human Rights Watch, South Africa has some of the highest rates of gender-based violence worldwide, including rape, female homicide, and domestic abuse. Young girls are at high risk of both physical and sexual violence, and victims face consequences both in their youth and later in adulthood. In recent years, South Africa has become a hot spot for human traffickers.

The Innocence Lost project is a powerful weapon in fighting and preventing the incidence of trafficking and gender-based violence to protect vulnerable young women in South Africa.

Innocence Lost is a play based on a true story about a young girl who manages to escape sex trafficking. The 2023 Naledi Award winning play is a heartfelt drama. Through the medium of theatre, we can access teenagers in a profound way. The project will tour to schools in vulnerable areas and trafficking hotspots.

Together with our partners Act Africa, we conduct a Q&A session after every performance. The powerful activation teaches teenagers that they are able to speak out about situations of trafficking, sexual exploitation and/or violence. In this way, we open up communication that was previously shrouded in secrecy due to embarrassment. Speaking up is an important weapon in fighting trafficking and GBV. Youth are taught to recognise dangerous situations and to call it out. This provides tools to escape abusive situations and empowers young people.

When young girls can avoid being caught up in trafficking and GBV, they have more chances of getting an education, a job and becoming productive members of society. They have more chance at a future. As schoolgoers share their experience and knowledge with family members, we can create exponential impact in broader communities. Our aim is to irradicate this social ill and empower young women across South Africa.
