Goal

The project will build a WASH facility and train teachers at four schools in the North West Province.

A lack of sanitation and hygiene facilities in school coupled with little or no hygiene education is a major contribution factor to the prevalence of waterborne and other diseases in children. These diseases have a negative impact on school attendance yet can be prevented through carefully planned interventions.

A lack of sanitation and hygiene facilities in school coupled with little or no hygiene education is a
major contribution factor to the prevalence of waterborne and other diseases in children. These
diseases have a negative impact on school attendance yet can be prevented through carefully
planned interventions.
Through its support Hamilton Saba Foundation acknowledged that water and sanitation facilities as
well as hygiene education was lacking at the school it supported, and would most likely be the case
for surrounding schools. In order to address this, Hamilton Saba Foundation is pleased to present a
one year project which seeks to improve school attendance by reducing illness related absenteeism
due to poor water and sanitation conditions. As Hamilton Saba Foundation Programming is only
undertaken based on evidence, the project will start by undertaking a needs analysis of the schools
which will inform project implementation.

However, indicative key project activities that will be implemented following the needs assessment include:
 Building WASH facilities for schools that require this infrastructure (due to resource constraints,
this will be limited to the schools most in need and up to a maximum of four);
 Training of school governing bodies (SGB) on planning for and taking forward WASH activities at
schools (assume 1 SGB member per school);
 Training of 10 focal teachers (2 from each school) on WASH programming / learner good hygiene
education; and
 Training of 20 learners (5 from each school) on WASH programming / good hygiene as peer
educators so that they are able to support WASH implementation.
