Goal

Masicorp is fundraising to expand The Stay & Play programme and the aim is now to take place 5 times a week doing training sessions which include: a 6-week intensive programme and includes 200 children and 10 adults; 4 sessions a year; 3 principal training sessions; and 2 parental support workshops per year. Masicorp has 26 education/skills development programmes that benefit almost 6 000 people from the Masiphumelele community.

Stay & Play currently reaches 17 of the informal, unregistered crèches in Masiphumelele and provides pre-school children with art therapy, crafts, singing, dancing and other educational activities. Many of these unregistered crèches are under-resourced, lacking in space, learning materials and toys. We upskill the crèche owners and carers, who run their crèches as private income-generating businesses, but who often do not have the necessary early childhood development skills to provide the children in their care with engaging and stimulating educational activities. Carers/owners attend a rigorous 6-week training course where they attend sessions at our Stay & Play Hub - a bright and stimulating centre and well-equipped classroom and playground, under the guidance of our Stay & Play team and an art therapist from our partners at the Masi Creative Hub (NGO). After six weeks, they attend regular rotational sessions along and the crèches are provided with educational equipment and stationery for use at their crèche. During participation in the programme, children are assessed in terms of behaviour, motor skills, literacy and numeracy, so we can see the impact the programme is having on the children.

Masicorp has been operating since 1999 and works closely with the community so the organisation has credibility, as they are our partners. We work in consultation with an M&E specialist to ensure that we measure impact. As mentioned above, we have the endorsement of third parties including the City Council, schools, teachers, and the local clinic as well as other NPOs operating in the area. Masicorp is proactive, innovative & resourceful.
